Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, and although I didn’t grow up on a reservation or near my Cherokee community, I’ve had the privilege of being a part of my local indigenous community comprised of all different tribes and we’re planning a wonderful gathering for this next weekend! So naturally, when I saw the label of @wildflowerwinery ‘Zee Rosy Bubbles' I fell in love with its energy, taste, and of course, the wonderful woman behind it. The wine - This Grenache pet-nat has a dusty, grapefruit pink color and aromas of strawberry, lemon rind, raspberry leaf and vanilla bean. On the palate, it's dry and slightly spicy towards the end. Natalie told me that her wines shouldn't force you to analyze anything - they should just be about enjoyment. So pour a glass, and enjoy! The woman - Natalie told me that she's always loved fermentation - from kombucha to kefir to sourdough, she's done it all, and after taking a WSET wine course, she decided to get into the fermentation of grapes, too. She named her label ‘Wildflowers’ as an homage to her family (her grandfather, who was Cherokee, was called Poppy) and to the beautiful poppy flowers that appear in Europe every Spring (she called Italy home for a few years!). Natalie works with farmers who believe in sustainability and consider the entire ecosystem of a vineyard and she crafts natural, low intervention wines from their bounty. She doesn't want anyone to be short-sighted about the potential of grapes and loves showcasing all the different things a varietal can become. From @alamo_creek_ranch east of Santa Maria, we picked this fruit and it went straight to closed tank where we blanketed it with CO2. These grapes started fermenting inside the berry, leaching color from the skins for less drying tannin and more silky fruit and floral characteristics. Store your wine lying down or upside down on the cork! My sister bought this bottle a few days before from a wine shop. How do you open a bottle when the cork disintegrates? You put the bottom in a sturdy shoe and whack it against a wall or tree until the pressure builds and the cork pops out. Bam! 💪🏼No floaties inside. Or you could just jam the cork back inside the bottle and strain the wine. My way is more fun. This can also be done if you find yourself with a bottle of wine and no wine key. I am very happy to show our Chardonnay block for 2021 (pics from 1month ago) comes from SIP Certified (Sustainability in Practice) Riverbench Vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley. . The SIP Standards require a measurable, holistic set of practices addressing habitat, water, energy, soil, recycling, air quality, packaging, pest management, social equity, and business management. I will also be working with another white grape from Riverbench this year. Any guesses?? The reveal will be in about 6 weeks at harvest!
